Myth Commentaries/2014517/8 (submitted)   All these three readings talk about the flood and the creation of mortals afterwards. Although they are talking about the same thing%2C they all have different angles to it.%0D%0APindar doesn%27t state the reason of the flood but instead talk more about what happens afterwards. It says that Zeus starts and ends the flood%2C and with his power%2C Deucalion and Pyrrha end up at Mount Parnassus and start the human race from stones.%0D%0AThe passage written by Ovid is more in detail. It gives details of pre-flood%2C during and post-flood. It states the fact that Zeus thought of destroying the world with his thunderbolt but because fate has appointed a time for the world to be destroyed by fire%2C he chose to end it with water. It shows that even Zeus has a limit. Zeus destroys the world with the help of Poseidon. Deucalion and Pyrrha are the only ones left surviving. They talk to the oracles%2C who tells them they need to throw the bones of their mothers. Deucalion solves the puzzle and they bring back humanity from the stones of the earth. Every stone that Deucalion throws turn into a man and every stone Pyrrha throws turn into a woman.%0D%0AIn the passage from the Bible%2C instead of several gods there is only one. He destroys the world because of the evilness in humanity by sending a storm. He tells Noah to build an ark and to bring his family%2C and his son%27s wives%2C one male and one female from every animal and bird so he can rebuild the world once the storm ends. Myth Commentaries/2014526/30 (submitted)   All three versions of the myths mention Niobe while comparing her pain to another%27s pain. In Homer%27s Iliad%2C she is compared to Priam. After her 14 children were killed by archer Artemis and Apollo because of her%2C she stopped eating for 9 days when her children were unburied. On the tenth day%2C the gods of heaven buried them and she started eating again. When Achilles brought to Priam his son back%2C he gave Niobe as an example saying that even she thought of meat after her children were buried and so he offered Priam a supper. We know that Leto punished Niobe because she thinks that she was better than her. Niobe%27s punishment is just and welcome.%0D%0ASophocles%27 Antigone is a tragedy that talks about Antigone%27s death. There is Antigone and Chorus in the passage. Chorus gives us summary and background information. The reason of Niobe%27a punishment is not stated but her pain is mentioned while being compared to the pain that Antigone is going to suffer. The language is a lot more understandable than Homer%27s language. Homer%27s writing is more complex and harder to understand.%0D%0AOvid%27s Metamorphoses is a poem which talks about what happened to Niobe in great detail again when being compared to Arachne. Manto sees the future and tells people to worship Latona but Niobe stops them from doing so. She doesn%27t feel inferior to gods so she ignores Manto and she wonders why she isn%27t worshipped instead of Latona. She is very self-confident because she is wealthy and she has 14 children when Latona only has 2. She even calls her childless. Latona gets very angry when she hears this and so she tells Artemis and Apollo both archers%2C to kill her children. Apollo kills her seven sons and Artemis kills her seven daughters. She turns into stone and gets carried to Mount Sipylus and cries there. Her death is just and welcome. May 26, 2014 15:08
Myth Commentaries/201462/19 (submitted)   All the gods love Pan. He looks like a human%2F goat hybrid%3B he has goat legs and two horns and a full beard. He is with nymphs all the time%2C singing dancing and slaying wild beasts. He is the god of mountains%2C flocks and music.. He can be found in the woods chasing nymphs. He is one of the main players on earth. He is seen as very powerful. Pan was chasing a nymph called Syrinx. She was turned in to reeds while trying to flee Pan. Pan cut the reeds and made them into pipes. In the sculpture of Pan%2C he is courting a young shepherd called Daphnis. He is teaching him how to play the pipes. This shows that he is very connected with people. He is helping them and they worship him for that. Homosexual relations appear often in Greek art and it is not a shameful thing. Both Hymns praise Pan and talk about his love for music%2C dancing and singing with nymphs. June 02, 2014 05:41
Myth Commentaries/201467/3 (submitted)   In Livy%27s version%2C Aeneas avoids being killed because he was always in favour of making peace. After the war%2C he sails to Italy in hope of settling and finding a permanent home. He was killed in the war against Etruscans. He gets deified after he gets killed. He becomes known as %22 the indigenous Jupiter%22 and his gets buried on the bank of Numicius. Ascanius%27 origins come from Venus and Anchises since Aeneas is their son. Rhea Silvia was supposed to be a Vesta virgin but she gets raped by Mars and has Romulus and Remus. Livy is a historian%2C his writing is a lot easier to comprehend than Vergil%27s. Unlike Livy%2C Vergil praises the muses in the beginning of his poem. His writing is quite complex and has lots of archaic words. He also praises Julius Caesar and Augustus in his poem. In the passage by Ennius%2C he only mentions Aeneas%27 death in the beginning and then talk about Romulus and Remus and gives a detailed explanation of Why Romulus was chosen to be the founder of the city. Ilia gets pregnant by Mars and has Romulus and Remus. They compete against each other to be the founder of the city. They are watching birds on a hill. Romulus sees more birds%2C 12%2C than Remus does and so he gets chosen to be the founder of the city. June 07, 2014 19:16
